U.C.W. (United Church Women)

Here at St. James our UCW has 2 units, Amicitia and Goforth. We continue to serve the community and our church, and though our numbers are fewer, we still make a difference. We meet monthly for fellowship, Christian reflection, good food and to plan events. We continue to have a fall Bazaar, a spring Book, Bake and Plant Sale and to provide Funeral Teas for our congregation. All these are possible because we have an active congregation who assist us. Everyone is welcome.

UCW celebrates 50 years of service

In 1962 the UCW was formed by the amalgamation of two women’s groups, the Women’s Missionary Society (WMS) and the Women’s Auxiliary (WA). Today we continue to serve in our community by visiting the sick and those less physically able and also support local projects. We give generously to support the work of the M&S Fund and other groups such as Robin’s Nest Children’s Homes in Africa.

Our Celebration

Sunday June 3, 2012 the UCW participated in a 50th Anniversary congregational service. Candles were lit and threads (ribbons) were placed as symbols of our weaving a story of service and love.

Eighteen members received certificates to honour their 50 plus years of service. These Charter Members represent the dedication of the UCW. The congregation gave them a well-deserved standing ovation.

Refreshments were served after church.

The AMICITIA unit meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Muriel Bridge Room.  In 2018 we held 10 meetings with an average attendance of 9 members.

Our monthly programs are varied and interesting.  Inspiring Devotions are prepared by members, turn about.  Each month we take turns providing light refreshments after the meeting.  One highlight this year was an interview on DVD with Ike Hewitt, telling of his experiences as a prisoner of war in WW 2.

At our May meeting, we had fun creating small bouquets of spring and fall flower arrangements from all the silk flowers that were in the “Flower” room upstairs. They will grace the windows in the church by season, to be set on doilies from Fern Robinson’s collection given to the church on her passing.

We purchased a new 100 cup coffee maker in February to have for catering events.

The members had two (2) main money-making projects.  The Plant, Bake and Book Sale, was on May 5, netting $663.55. The Frosty Fair on November 10 netted $2,404.56. Jody Mahoney spearheaded a Fund-Raiser by selling kits put together with products from “The Waterford Girl”.

We served a lunch for the Hospital Auxiliary for 36 people on April 18, and for a Seminar for Central Erie Insurance for 16 people on June 6. Barb Helka, our intrepid Auctioneer, coaxed our wallets open for our annual “Blind Auction” on June 12.  We gave $100.00 to Ryerson Church Camp as a result.

We served Funeral Teas and Celebrations of Life Teas for Betty Kemp, June Roloson, Rose Pond, Judy Allison and Bernice Irish.  The same day as Judy’s Tea, five ladies drove to Blenheim to support Mae Bedford at her husband, Don’s funeral.  This was the same day as a service for Gerry Hamill’s mother in Kitchener.

In April, some members attended the Erie Presbyterial meeting at St. Paul’s United Church in Paris.  At the Fall Gathering in Delhi, September 24, Millie Cation and Phyllis Buchner were the guest speakers.  Mae ordered a special cake to celebrate the formation, 100 years ago, of the Women’s Inter-Church Council.  Phyllis Buchner is now a member on that Council.  October 1, a few ladies attended the Fall Gathering at Oneida to hear the interesting and entertaining speaker “Angela” Greenfield.

Throughout this year, we have enjoyed meeting with the ladies from Old Windham United Church.  In May we went to the home of Joan Daley for a Pot Luck Supper.   We saw a slide presentation prepared by George Pond and narrated by her mother, Bell Pond on tape. Also, they invited us to join them for a supper meal at the Blue Elephant on October 30.  There were thirty-two (32) ladies all together!

They joined us in July at the Simcoe Arms and in August at the Thai Express and for our Christmas Pot Luck Meeting.   We were blessed again this year to have Kristin Vollick play her harp for our gathering and for singing of carols before the program.

AMICITIA IS THE Latin word for “friendship”, so our group is well-named.
We serve, study, pray, sing, learn and laugh together as a group of friends.
